Hydrothermal Systems in Oceanic Arcs: Subseafloor Structure, Mineralization Processes, and Vent Communities III Posters

Session Description:
Submarine hydrothermal systems represent the seafloor manifestation of the exchange of mass and energy between the oceanic lithosphere and hydrosphere. While hydrothermal systems at mid-ocean ridges have been reasonably well characterized, those occurring in arc and backarc settings have been less well studied.

Drilling expeditions and related site surveys have recently been conducted by IODP and through Japanese funding on hydrothermal systems in arc and backarc settings in the western Pacific. New geophysical, geochemical and microbiological studies of these systems, as well as access to the subseafloor by shallow or deep drilling, provide new insights into the architecture of these hydrothermal sites and the processes of mineralization. This session will focus on results from these recent expeditions as well as the development of novel technologies to access and sample these extreme environments.
