Extreme Sea Levels: Statistics, Impacts, and Adaptation Posters

Session Description:
Extreme sea levels can lead to hazardous events with wide-ranging environmental, societal, and economic consequences, as recently experienced during the record setting 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. In combination with sea-level rise and potential changes in storminess, dynamic wave contributions, and tidal dynamics, the adverse consequences of extreme oceanographic events are in many regions projected to escalate. Integrated impact assessments can guide decisions on adaptive responses to these changes in the coupled natural human system. This session seeks contributions that: examine present-day and future extreme sea levels at local-to-global scales by employing advanced numerical and/or statistical modelling techniques; assessed the different types of impacts associated with extreme sea levels such as flooding, beach/dune erosion, salt water intrusion, or ecosystem degradation; took an integrated approach to evaluate adaptation options in the presence of deep uncertainty; or report  outcomes of interdisciplinary collaborations between engineers, natural, social, and economic scientists, stakeholders, and policy makers.
