A53J:
Interactions Between Land Surface, Convective Boundary Layer, Clouds, and Aerosols: Linking Observations with Models II Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 45743

Session Description:
Interactive processes between land-surface and atmospheric boundary layer are important for surface energy budget, trace gas, momentum and aerosol transport, cloud lifecycle and initiation of deep convection. Recent advances in observations such as Lidar systems, provide a detailed sampling of turbulence structures and can be used to improve our understanding of the coupling and feedback processes. New modeling paradigms, such as nesting large eddy simulation, also provide a new way to examine the role of different processes. Taking advantage of these advances, this session will highlight process studies on local and diurnal scales and address questions including: 1) How important is the influence of the land surface on the boundary-layer turbulence, clouds, and precipitation? 2) What boundary layer and land processes contribute to the diversity of soil moisture-precipitation feedbacks? And 3) How do feedbacks between biogenic emissions, secondary organic aerosol, boundary layer, and clouds influence the cloud lifecycle?
