Session Description:
In recent years, data and information about exoplanets have expanded tremendously. More than 3,000 exoplanets have been identified in more than 2,000 planetary systems. Their sizes and dynamics are diverse. Several dozen systems have multiple planets in the “habitable zone.” The growing amount of data is increasingly providing (through comparison) important tests of our understanding about the formation and evolution of our solar system. Similarly, our understanding of our solar system has expanded greatly during recent decades and spacecraft have visited every planet, several asteroids, comets, as well as parts of the Kuiper belt. These observations are complemented by ground-based studies, return samples, expansion of our meteorite collections, increased understanding of Earth, especially its early history and mineral physics experiments. This session will bring together perspectives with speakers from the American Geophysical Union and the American Astronomical Society to explore needed future connections.
