V23D:
Applications of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to the study of volcanic systems Posters

Session ID#: 47395
Session Description:
Observing volcanoes and collecting near-vent measurements can be both difficult and dangerous. Eruptive activity may prohibit access to regions near the volcano or destroy deployed equipment. Other locations can simply be impractical to reach. Thus, volcanoes are often monitored and studied with an incomplete data set. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, are now bridging the gap between direct and remote measurements by enabling observations and in-plume measurements from a safe and accessible distance. Recent developments in UAS technology, matched by a drive towards increasingly lightweight and compact sensor payloads, have made their use more accessible to new users while simultaneously increasing their capability in terms of flight time, range, and instrumentation. To bring together the growing community of researchers using, or seeking to use, UAS methods to observe volcanoes, we invite submissions to this session describing novel applications of UAS to topics related to volcanic processes.
