Marine-Based Methods of Global CO2 Management Posters

Session Description:
Forecasts by the IPCC and others indicate that keeping global warming below 2ÂșC will require increased efforts to reduce GHG emissions as well as pro-active removal of CO2 from the atmosphere and increased CO2 retention by natural sinks. Considering the important role the ocean already plays in moderating atmospheric CO2, this session explores biotic, chemical, electrochemical, geochemical, physical and hybrid methods of expanding marine-based CO2 capture, removal and/or storage as well as avoidance of CO2 emissions. Specific examples include: 1) C-neutral/negative emissions strategies such as Blue Carbon, aquaculture, permaculture, ocean fertilization, marine BECCS, enhanced weathering, alkalinity addition and seawater CO2 stripping, 2) renewable energy (fuels or electricity) derived from sources including wind, wave, solar, biomass, thermal and salinity, and 3) methods to reduce emissions from marine shipping. The economic, policy, geopolitical, governance, legal and ethical implications of the preceding will also be addressed.
