Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer Processes Affecting Electromagnetic and Electro-optical Wave Propagation I Posters

Session Description:
The atmospheric index of refraction affects the propagation of electromagnetic waves. While small-scale turbulence structure is critical to electro-optical propagation in applications such as free-space laser communication or high energy laser weapons, the vertical gradients in the index of refraction may result in over-the-horizon “ducting” of radar and microwave communication signals. Past research of the atmospheric surface layer largely focused on turbulent fluxes, while the small-scale turbulence structure and the vertical gradients of temperature and humidity have received less attention. This session will provide an opportunity to present recent advances in boundary layer meteorology and air-sea interaction with relevance to electromagnetic and electro-optical propagation. We solicit contributions that address major scientific gaps in accurately capturing and representing the vertical gradients of wind and thermodynamic properties and small-scale turbulence structure in the marine environment. Observational, theoretical and numerical studies as well as contributions toward cutting-edge measurement capability are welcome.
