The Human Process and Wicked Problems in Earth’s Future Posters

Session Description:
Environmental problems are increasingly recognized as wicked, referring to the convergence of multiple hazards set in a complex human-natural system, where stakeholders are numerous and diverse, and solutions involve environmental and/or socio-economic-political trade-offs. Sustainability science research suggests that what elevates environmental problems from difficult to seemingly intractable is the role and behaviour of humans, at scales from individual to institutional.

Our understanding within the Earth science community, however, is largely cloaked in the disciplines of environmental and global change science. Complementary analyses of the human process, particularly from a behavioural perspective, are available in the disciplines of sociology, social sciences, behavioural economics, psychology, marketing, business, land-use planning, environmental history, deep geography, and others.

Our session aims to bring together this variety of perspectives that document, illustrate and quantify human behavior (individual to institutional) as a human process within the context of describing and developing solutions for wicked environmental problems.
