High-Resolution Observations and Modeling of Physical Phenomena Involved in Cloud Electrification and Lightning eLightning

Session Description:
Cloud electrification and lightning involve complex physical phenomena that manifest across a multitude of spatial and temporal scales. In order to properly observe or simulate these phenomena, researchers often make use of high-resolution approaches such as high-speed photography, spectroscopy, and videography; multi-dimensional mapping of lightning flashes using radio-frequency emissions; cloud-resolving atmospheric models coupled with electrification schemes; and complex physical models of subatomic particle motion and collisions. Unfortunately, results from these approaches are often difficult to present easily in traditional conference formats such as slide-based talks (which limit interactivity) and static posters. Therefore, this session is intended for cloud electrification and lightning studies that would benefit from a non-traditional presentation format that improves the ability to interactively present complex scientific results. Studies focusing on all aspects of lightning physics and cloud electrification are highly encouraged, particularly if they are best communicated through use of video, animations, and other advanced visualizations.
