GC31J:
Taking the Temperature of the Earth: Challenges, Trends, and Applications Across All Earth Surface Domains Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 48660

Session Description:
Surface temperature (ST) is a critical variable for studying the energy and water balance of the Earth’s surface in addition to monitoring temperature trends related to climate change. There is an urgent need for the better understanding of in situ measurements and satellite observations to quantify ST as it changes from day to day, month to month, and over decadal time scales. To meet this need thhe EarthTemp network (http://www.earthtemp.net/) was established in 2012 to stimulate new international collaboration in measuring and better understanding correlations of different ST’s across the Earth’s surface including air, land, sea, lakes, and ice. In support of this we present the 6th EarthTemp session at the AGU with topics related to 1) progress in improving the quality of ST products through rigorous validation, 2) monitoring variability and long-term climate trends, and 3) science applications of ST data to detect and better understand Earth system behavior.
