Session Description:
Reanalysis is a scientific method for producing a physically complete estimation of the past state and variability of geophysical systems. Over the last decade, reanalysis data sets have become a popular tool addressing multiple purposes in weather and climate sciences. Reanalyses are employed as a basis for applications building on long-term gridded data sets, as "true state" estimates in assessing the fidelity of model simulations, or as a source of information when studying short-term variability and longterm changes of the climate system. Continuous developments of reanalyses provide constant improvements of quality which is evaluated by using independent observations and through intercomparison approaches which enhance the understanding of the different reanalyses and optimize the future use of observing systems.
The session welcomes contributions on new developments, evaluation, intercomparison and applications of reanalyses. We welcome contributions from all types of reanalyses, including but not limited to global, regional, atmospheric, ocean, and coupled reanalyses.
