Earth’s Organic Carbon Cycle: From Oceans to Mantle Posters

Session Description:
Understanding the details of the past and present functioning of the carbon cycle is a profound scientific challenge, and it has become a matter of public-health and safety in the Anthropocene. Earth’s carbon cycle has been shaped by  Ì´3 billion years of uninterrupted metabolic evolution on a backdrop of episodic tectonic disruptions. This session will specifically focus on the cycle of reduced carbon. It will offer a mosaic of perspectives on its history, architecture and dynamics across time and space. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanisms of organic carbon flows from the cellular to the planetary scale, and on their implications for the past and future evolution of ocean and atmosphere chemistry. Priority will be given to: 1. the evolution of carbon metabolisms, land and ocean biomass through time, 2. the incorporation, transformation and weathering of organic materials through continents, the oceanic lithosphere and mantle.
