Session Description:
Silica dissolved in seawater (DSi, primarily derived from silicate weathering) is converted by biosilicifiers to opal and buried in sediments. Today, low [DSi] reflects its efficient uptake by pelagic silicifiers, principally diatoms. However, the marine Si-cycle may have functioned quite differently in the geologic past. First, the organisms that mediate the Si-cycle only proliferated relatively recently (the mid-Cenozoic, for diatoms), allowing potentially much higher DSi prior to their advent. Second, the DSi input from weathering (which links the Si-cycle to paleoclimate and the carbon cycle via the silicate weathering "thermostat") likely varied over time. Such variations likely occurred with both long-term climatic trends and geologically abrupt climate/carbon-cycle perturbations, including Paleogene hyperthermal events and Phanerozoic mass extinctions. We seek contributions that explore a dynamic Si-cycle over geologic time (particularly Phanerozoic timescales) with modeling and observations constraining the evolution and impact of silicifiers, and connections to paleoclimate and other biogeochemical cycles.
