Flight Research Techniques That Bring Results Using NASA Armstrong Airborne Science ER-2, G3, and DC-8 Aircraft I Posters

Session Description:
In this study, atmospheric science flight research [in-situ and remote sensing data-extraction] techniques and results will be discussed to show the versatility of the unique aircraft at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center in California. The ER-2 flies missions at 20 KM above sea level, well above the tropopause, to calibrate GOES-R/S geo-stationary satellites. The G3/C-20 aircraft uses a modified synthetic aperture radar [SAR] that flies along a precise, fixed “tube” that is 12.5 KM above sea level on each mission to map a variety of earth subsidence (composition) missions. The DC-8 on its A-TOM [atmospheric tomography] missions sample aerosols and particulates in a wide swath of atmosphere see-sawing from sea level to 50,000 feet starting in the northern polar region to the Antarctic along the Pacific, then opposite direction north-bound through the Atlantic. The review will cover both flight research techniques and recent results for these specialized aircraft.
