Application of Forest Change Mapping and Error Estimation to Forest Carbon Financing Mechanisms and Rural Development Posters

Session Description:
Methods to accurately estimate and track patterns of forest loss and gain have become more important as countries are expected to report on progress to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of their Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement as well as demonstrate results for forest carbon financing mechanisms. This session will highlight examples of forest change mapping at the country level, including methods to estimate and reduce the error associated with this mapping.  Results will be discussed in the context of requirements of current programs such as the Forest Carbon Fund. This session will explore key issues with existing reporting systems such as (1) improving methods for determining the relative importance of different drivers of deforestation (2) improving estimates of degradation and restoration (3) improved  integration of forest change data with other land use change.
