New Models of Citizen Science for the Next Century of AGU: Approaches to Enable Meaningful Engagement with Evidence and the Scientific Process

Session Description:
Citizen scientists are contributing to research and monitoring in new ways. This expansion is enabled by new and emerging technologies and recently-launched avenues for researchers and practitioners to share and refine best practices. A long-standing image of citizen science involves volunteers collecting hands-on measurements under the direction of professional scientists. While this model still has merit, new project types expand the scope of the field. Online projects engage volunteers worldwide in analyzing data and imagery in ways and numbers not previously possible. Gaming interfaces allow participants to help solve real-world problems while playing. Collaborative and co-created projects involve the public in additional aspects of the scientific process. Other projects aim to involve people while they are enjoying outdoor adventure experiences or being ecotourists. These approaches help open science to broader participation and perspectives. This session will feature projects across disciplines using a range of innovative models and themes.
