P42C:
The Effects of Impact Cratering on Mafic Rocks and Minerals I eLightning
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 50476
Session Description:
This session highlights recent and ongoing work focused on impact cratering effects in mafic rocks and minerals (including but not limited to olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase). We seek contributions that involve field, laboratory, and remote studies of terrestrial, extraterrestrial, or experimental cratering.
Whereas impact sites emplaced into mafic igneous terrains are rare on Earth, they dominate other planetary bodies. Therefore understanding their effects is vital to many aspects of planetary science. Recently significant advances have been made with high-resolution mineralogical techniques and high resolution orbital imagery and spectroscopy. This session attempts to bridge cratering at both very small and very large spatial scales.
