Toward a Phanerozoic History of Earth’s Surface Temperature Posters

Session Description:
Earth’s average surface temperature has remained between the freezing and boiling points of water throughout the Phanerozoic. Within this first-order stability, however, there have been extended intervals when even polar regions were warm, other long cool periods exhibiting glacial-interglacial cycles, and geologically brief but significant episodes of very high temperature. We know much about global temperature for the last 120 million years from δ18O, Mg/Ca, and lipid-based paleothermometry applied to deep-sea sediments, but for earlier times proxy data are sparser and more varied. A global surface temperature history for the entire Phanerozoic integrating all proxy data would be an important tool for investigating the mechanisms and biotic impact of climate change, and serve as an icon for public communication of the scientific understanding of climate and climate history. We invite presentations on models, data and methods that contribute to assembling the global average surface temperature history of the Phanerozoic.
