Session Description:
Penetrating radiation by energetic particles has a major effect on the human technology in the altitude range above the troposphere. Exposure to energetic particles often leads to malfunctions and unexpected failures of electronics onboard manned and unmanned spacecraft and poses a serious health risk for astronauts. Ionizing radiation also has a global impact on Earth’ upper atmosphere, producing scintillations which affect the navigation systems. This session seeks contributions focused on observation and modeling of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar energetic particles (SEPs) in Earth’ magnetosphere, their variability during solar cycle as well as in response to extreme solar activity. The scope of the session focus includes discussion of the energetic particle radiation environment due to GCRs and SEPs in the altitude range starting from the troposphere and up to that of the outer magnetosphere.
