PP31E:
Alkenones in Marine, Estuarine, and Lacustrine Environments: New Biogeochemical Insights and Paleoclimatic Applications Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 51061
Session Description:
Long-chain alkenones (LCAs) have been widely used for reconstructing past sea surface temperatures for over three decades. Recent studies, however, indicate that the full potential of this unique class of biomarkers is far from realized. This session aims to present the latest research on LCAs and innovative applications thereof to important geological problems. We welcome submissions involving (but not limited to): 1) advances in methods for separation and structural analysis of LCAs, and enhanced chemotaxonomy; 2) molecular ecology studies of alkenone-producing haptophytes in environmental and cultured isolates examining phylogenetic diversity and evolutionary relationships of various species of Isochrysidales; 3) new insights into the biosynthesis of alkenones and alkenoates ; 3) carbon isotopic signatures of LCAs for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, such as pCO2 levels; 4) hydrogen isotopic signatures of alkenones for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, such as hydrological conditions; 5) disentangling complex LCA signatures, both relative abundance and isotopic, in lacustrine and estuarine environments.
