Session Description:
Given the increase of geodetic data available, improving volcano deformation modeling now becomes crucial to better understand the processes leading to eruptions. In most cases, ground deformation has been modeled using homogeneous elastic half-spaces. However, over the past decade, many studies have developed numerical models to represent more realistic behavior and dynamics of volcanic systems. Some examples include topography, complex rheology of the host rocks, mechanical heterogeneities, elaborate reservoir shapes or magmatic physical-chemical properties. Numerous resources are now available, highlighting the necessity of better understanding the relevance of these new options and better quantify the benefit for the interpretation of volcanic ground deformation. We invite contributions:
- using numerical/experimental models to better fit observed ground deformation at different scales (focused but not limited to magma storage, magma propagation, and edifice instability)
- focusing on sensitivities of model parameters and uncertainties
- bringing constraints on model parameters (seismic tomography, rock experiments)
