Session Description:
Grove Karl Gilbert (1843-1918) helped to formalize the earth surface system, and a century after his death the Earth and planetary science communities remain engaged on topics first broached by Gilbert's curious mind. His career spanned the era of scientific exploration of the American West and formation of the US Geological Survey. Gilbert and his colleagues, among them John Wesley Powell and Clarence Dutton, defined the geological, hydrological and ethnographic problems of the West. Through investigations of pluvial Lake Bonneville and the Henry Mountains, Utah, Gilbert investigated coastal geomorphology, intrusive mechanics, and landscape evolution. While examining the sediment released during hydraulic mining in the Sierra Nevada, Gilbert designed flume experiments that formalized sediment transport mechanics. In this union session, we assemble invited talks that focus on both the broad scientific legacy of Gilbert and new frontiers of study in Earth and planetary processes.
