Session Description:
Large areas of natural forests have been converted into industrial tree and cash crops. Woody plant encroachment (WPE) into native grasslands have also occurred globally. The resultant spatial-temporal dynamics of natural forests, industrial tree and cash crops and WPE have substantial impacts on carbon and water cycles from local to global scales under human activities and climate change. This session aims to highlight recent activities that map and characterize the spatial-temporal dynamics of natural forests, industrial plantations and WPE. It welcome diverse contributions that (1) use multi-sensor and/or time series remote sensing data to generate annual maps of natural forests, industrial plantations, and WPE in the last few decades; (2) analyze climate, socio-economic, and policy factors that drive observed spatial-temporal dynamics of natural forests, industrial plantations, and WPE; and (3) assess the consequences (e.g., carbon and water cycles) of observed spatial-temporal dynamics of natural forests, industrial plantations, and WPE .
