Analogue Studies of Gradient Systems Relevant to Astrobiology on Ocean Worlds and Mars I Posters

Session Description:
Laboratory and field investigations of gradient systems are essential order to understand processes that may drive the emergence or sustenance of life on other worlds. Of particular interest are hydrothermal systems as well as abiotic electrochemical reactions; studies of terrestrial vent sites combined with laboratory simulations can give insight into vent processes that may be occurring on ocean worlds. Also of interest are gradients in porous media / sediment environments, analogous to what may be found in ocean world seafloors or the Mars subsurface. Understanding how gradient systems in promote organic chemistry, geochemical cycling, and support life, requires in-situ measurement techniques enhanced by laboratory investigations of samples that simulate the effects of environmental parameters. This session will address mineral-organic reactions, nutrient cycling, and metabolisms that occur in gradient systems in the laboratory and in the field, relevant to origin and detection of life on ocean worlds and wet rocky planets.
