Session Description:
Trace elements (TEs) are critical tools in geochemistry and for the study of biogeochemical cycles in the present and past. For example, in marine systems, TEs are present either in soluble form or adsorbed onto particles within authigenic minerals and dissolved organic matter. The mobility and speciation of TEs are highly complex and are functions of redox conditions, pH, and complexing agents and allow for quantitative reconstructions of past biogeochemical cycles. Accurate reconstructions of past biological signatures and geochemical processes based on the trace elements in the oxic, anoxic, or euxinic environments require an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for changes in trace element concentrations in different redox environments and that are preserved in the rock record. We seek contributions that employ both traditional and novel geochemical and geomicrobiological techniques towards enhancing the understanding of TEs in the environment and use TEs to interpret the paleoredox and paleoproductivity.
