Science to Action: Accelerating Innovation of Applied Climate Science for Risk Reduction and Resilience—A New Role for the Sustained National Climate Assessment

Session Description:
Pressure is increasing to implement mitigation and adaptation measures. Practitioners at state and local levels need authoritative data, tools, and methods to inform climate action. This session will explore the role of scientific assessments in establishing authoritative knowledge, tools, and strategies to incorporate science in managing climate risk in areas such as financial analysis, designing climate-resilient infrastructure, assessing inland flooding, reducing wildfire risk, and other practical challenges. It will consider how the US National Climate Assessment could evaluate the rigor of applications of climate science to develop authoritative guidance for practitioners and climate services. Presentations will explore the recommendations of an advisory committee that proposes an increased role for state/local/tribal governments, universities, professional societies, and non-governmental organizations in the National Assessment through a new civil society Climate Assessment Consortium. Use of methods such as model evaluation, artificial intelligence, and public participation in data collection will be considered.
