Snakes on a Satellite: Using Python and Modern Tools for Research and Analysis of Satellite Data Products

Session Description:
This hands-on workshop will provide a crash course on using Python and other modern tools to analyze satellite datasets and improve research efficiency. You will learn the basics of the NetCDF and HDF self-describing data formats, display data FAST using Panoply, and perform basic visualization and analysis using Python. Additionally, we will present some of the best practices such as using version control and following clean coding guidelines.

This session will be beneficial for those just getting started with scientific programming and also more experienced programmers who want an overview of modern tools. While exercises will focus on GOES-16 aerosol datasets, the presented tools and techniques can be applied to other satellite datasets across any discipline.
