Session Description:
Flooding often occurs due to multiple physical processes and management decisions on varying space and time scales, creating the need for integrated flood models. Model integration can indicate combining different physical processes such as coastal and wave dynamics, rainfall and surface runoff, river discharges, urban drainage, groundwater and sewer networks; or it can include physical interaction with socio-economic and management systems. These processes can occur over varied space and timescales making model integration challenging. However, improving flood modeling and disaster planning requires the use of integrated models and is becoming the new standard. This session will present relevant examples of integrated flood modeling to understand how the integration of the different processes furthers our understanding of flood events and hazard risks. As a truly interdisciplinary session, it will underscore the emergent nature of insights gained by coupling and co-developing flood models that can represent multiple physical processes and/or social systems.
