Improving Heat Stress–Related Health Outcomes Through Adaptation and Mitigation: Advances in Modeling Heat Stress Hazards, Exposure, and Vulnerability Posters

Session Description:
Increases in extreme heat are some of the most robust changes projected by climate models. The need for additional research on associated health risks is well-recognized, as exemplified by the incorporation of additional heat stress-related variables in CMIP6. At the same time, demographic changes are likely to alter how populations are exposed and vulnerable to increased heat stress. This session will bring together advances in modeling heat stress hazards, exposure, and vulnerability. Heat stress researchers from these arenas can discuss their data needs, how heat stress is incorporated into climate projections, and where improvements might lead to more readily usable information for practitioners and ultimately better health outcomes. This session will provide an opportunity for researchers like epidemiologists and climate modelers to exchange ideas on how to refine approaches that capture the adverse health impacts that might be avoided through mitigation, and identify adaptation gaps to be addressed by decision-makers.
