U42A:
Sixty Years of Scientific Achievements in the Arctic and Antarctica: Looking Back, Looking Forward

Note: Abstract submissions to Union sessions are by invitation only.

Session ID#: 52410

Session Description:
The International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1958 initiated many historic steps forward for polar science, including the founding of the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the U.S. National Academies’ Polar Research Board (PRB) which has served the polar science community through a diverse array of studies, assessments, workshops, and reviews that have had significant implications for U.S. research agendas and scientific advancements, both in the Arctic and Antarctic.  The PRB proposes a Union Session that includes invited presentations from leaders in multiple disciplines to discuss foundational polar science discoveries and milestones that have unfolded in the decades since the IGY. Speakers will also look to the future and offer perspectives on how polar science and polar environments could potentially evolve over the coming decades.
