Connecting Earth Sciences and Risk Financing and Transfer: Case Studies on Integration and Application of Earth Observations in the Insurance Sectors

Session Description:
As geophysical scientists seek to advance the understanding of the Earth as a system, risk practitioners aim to create viable insurance products and programs. This session calls for demonstrations of Earth observations within the insurance, risk financing, or risk transfer sectors, addressing risk markets such as agriculture, drought, floods, fires, earthquakes, severe weather, and climate, regardless of location. How have Earth observations and modeling communities contributed to informing risk models, risk landscapes, and damage assessments? What are current practices and gaps in connecting near-real time data to parametric insurance payouts or forecast-based early actions? This session also welcomes contributions on the future of risk modeling and emerging demands of the geophysical and Earth observations communities. Examples of scientists and practitioners collectively reducing risk, closing the protection gap, and enabling quicker recoveries, in support of global policy frameworks such as the Sendai Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, are welcome.
