Engaging Science to Enhance Preparedness for Regional and National-Level Response to Volcanic Eruptions Posters

Session Description:
Moderate to large volcanic eruptions are infrequent yet high-consequence events that are a hazard to local environments, and also have the potential for a global catastrophe. In the U.S. alone, the consequences of eruptions increase as more people move to locations that are vulnerable to volcanic eruptions. Preparing for large eruptions and their effects involves a multidisciplinary collaborative approach. In addition to scientific studies identifying the processes leading to volcanic eruptions, interagency coordination and exchanges between volcano scientists and disaster experts will ensure a fast, effective, and strategic response. This session provides an opportunity to discuss some of the challenges that must be addressed to improve the current agency and institutional response plans for volcanic events and engage the broader scientific community in the discussion.
