Session Description:
Meeting the challenges of the Anthropocene is a daunting task. It will require forging new connections between the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities because it is human desires, decisions, and behaviors, and their complex interplay with the environment, that will increasingly shape the future of climate, water, and ecosystem evolution around the world. Building these linkages is critical to ensure that the tremendous academic and intellectual output of the geoscience community is put to effective use in a world dominated by political, economic, cultural, and other social factors. Through a combination of invited talks and a discussion period, this session charts a course for the next generation of integrated Earth system models that recognize “human systems science” as the emerging central science of the Anthropocene.
