The Global Expression of the 8.2 ka Event Posters

Session Description:
The last major abrupt climate event occurred ca. 8,200 years ago, following the abrupt climate transitions of the last glacial cycle. These events, which were associated with variations in the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, provide unique insight into the global climate system and demonstrate its ability to undergo dramatic reorganization on decadal timescales. The 8.2 ka event holds particular relevance for future climate change as evidence suggests that the AMOC may weaken under anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing. Paleoclimate data and climate models have provided important insight into the 8.2 ka event, but substantial uncertainty remains regarding its spatial characteristics and teleconnection patterns. We invite contributions of new proxy records, data syntheses and/or model simulations to assess the current state of knowledge of the spatial expression, teleconnections and dynamical mechanisms of the 8.2 ka event.
