Session Description:
We invite proposals detailing efforts to engage the ‘unusual suspects’ around environmental and global change problems. These are lay publics not otherwise engaged in scientific, political, or civic discourse through organized interests or issue advocacy. Many approaches to engagement around environmental issues tend to focus on knowledge deficit in ideologically-aligned public audiences. Such engagements fail to bridge scientific processes, policy processes, and civic processes. They primarily focus on addressing the scientific community’s assessment of risks, not decision-makers’ needs or the public’s values and concern. As such, we welcome proposals reporting examples of ‘honest broker’ engagement with policy makers, scientists, and the public where all three are equal contributors.
