PP31D:
Biomarkers from Source to Sink: Proxy Development, Mechanistic Theory, and Applications Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 54096

Session Description:
Molecular fossils (biomarkers) can provide crucial information on the operation of Earth’s climate system, ecology, and biogeochemistry in the past through changes in their (relative) abundance and/or their isotopic composition. Interpretations of molecular and isotopic signals from biomarkers in sediments are typically grounded in empirical correlations. Developing mechanistic understandings of how environmental factors influence biosynthesis, and how biomarker signals are modified through transport and deposition, increases the value of these data and expands opportunities for their application. This session aims to bring together the organic geochemical and paleoclimate communities to further explore biomarker proxies. We welcome investigations of biomarker synthesis, transport, and post-depositional alteration, in addition to biomarker-based reconstructions of key aspects of Earth’s system on all time scales and from any depositional environment. We also encourage contributions that integrate biomarker proxies with modeling to obtain a more holistic understanding of the climate system.
