The North Atlantic Region in the Early Icehouse World Posters

Session Description:
The establishment of a permanent icecap on Antarctica ~33 Ma marks the beginning of our current icehouse climate. Decreasing atmospheric CO2and reorganization of southern gateways causing changes in ocean circulation are commonly considered as the main drivers of this climate shift, with orbital parameters setting the pace of change. However, the nature and potential role of northern hemisphere changes and forcings, especially in the North Atlantic (a critical component of modern ocean-climate system and known to be climatically sensitive during the Pleistocene), remains uncertain. An unfolding picture of early Cenozoic changes in North Atlantic oceanography, climate, biota, and solid Earth processes (tectonics) highlights the need for multidisciplinary studies in this region. This session encourages contributions that explore links between geologic history, cryosphere development, oceanography and the environment affecting the North Atlantic basin (and beyond) during the late Paleogene to early Neogene. Proxy and physical and numerical modeling studies are welcome.
