Enhancing Measurements of pCO2 in Freshwaters Using High-Frequency in Situ Sensors: Options and Best Practices

Session Description:
Freshwaters release a considerable amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere, generated in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with dynamics varying over short time scales due to storm events and other disturbances.  Yet high frequency measurements of freshwater pCO2 to characterize variability are rare. A new generation of in situ pCO2 sensors is now available and offers the potential to fill this gap.  This workshop aims to bring together aquatic and terrestrial biogeochemists, hydrologists, sensor developers, and vendors, to discuss the current state of pCO2 sensing and make recommendations to develop an aquatic pCO2 sensor network analogous to eddy flux networks on land.
