Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to Strengthen the Geoscience Community

Session Description:
The geosciences lag behind other STEM disciplines in the engagement, recruitment and advancement of traditionally underrepresented groups. Diversity promotes innovation and strengthens our ability to tackle complex geoscience problems; yet despite recent initiatives dedicated to improving diversity and inclusiveness in STEM, progress has been limited. In this context, understanding implicit bias is crucial because it impacts our decision-making and perceptions. While overt discrimination has reduced over time, underrepresented groups often face “invisible” challenges relating to things like recommendation letters, conference invitations, performance evaluations, and peer review. The cumulative impact of such biases is enormous, with minorities significantly underrepresented at senior levels and positions of power. This session will advance the longer-term goal of promoting a cultural shift towards greater diversity and inclusion in the geosciences.
