Halogens in the Earth System Posters

Session Description:
While halogens are minor volatile species on Earth, their significant effects on the physico-chemical properties of magmatic melts and fluids in the lithosphere and on the atmospheric chemistry makes them key actors of Earth processes. Their relatively high concentration in seawater and sediments combined with their distinct elemental compositions in these superficial reservoirs makes them useful tracers to evaluate recycling processes between the Earth’s mantle and surface. Emissions of both natural and anthropogenic halogens lead to perturbation of the atmospheric chemistry, and life-threatening contamination of soils and water. They are notably responsible for ozone depletion over various temporal and spatial scales, generating climate forcing. Studying halogens from the deep Earth to the atmosphere is thus crucial to better evaluate the global halogens budget and their impact on ozone and climate. This session includes presentations on numerous aspects of the role of halogens (Cl, Br, I) in the Earth system.
