Session Description:
Carbon is an integral building block of life on Earth and has fueled unprecedented economic and societal progress. But with progress has come significant increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane, causing warming and other health and environmental impacts. While efforts to reduce reliance on carbon-based fuels proceed, there is also growing attention to the need to remove carbon from the atmosphere (negative emissions), reliably sequester it, and develop commercial uses for it in order to meet international climate goals. Advancements and challenges in methane emissions monitoring, measurement, and verification; utilization of carbon waste streams; and carbon dioxide removal and storage approaches will be highlighted. This session will build on Recent National Academies’ reports on these topics and more broadly explore multipdisciplinary work on negative emissions technologies and associated economic, legal and ethical challenges ranging from land-use, water withdrawals and energy consumption, among others.
