A51Q:
Quantifying and Reducing the Uncertainties in the Global and Regional Aerosol Forcing of Climate III Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 56909

Session Description:
Uncertainties in aerosol radiative forcing constitute a principal barrier in our quantitative understanding of the global and regional climate system. Large uncertainty in the radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosols persists despite significant developments in model complexity, increases in global observations and advances in our knowledge of aerosol-related physical, chemical, and dynamical processes. The scope of the session includes: aerosol-related causes of uncertainty, methodologies to reduce the uncertainty in forcings, process-based evaluations, constraints on model simulations using observations of aerosols, clouds and radiation, insights into microphysics-chemistry-optics-radiation linkages, and improved understanding of the forcing influences on atmospheric circulation including effects on the hydrological cycle. Novel ways of model analysis, synthesis of model and observation data to quantify and narrow the uncertainties, and advances in the significance of the global-to-regional-to-smaller scale forcing and phenomena with implications for the reduction of uncertainties, would be instructive.
