IN21B:
Free and Open-Source Technologies for Advancing Earth and Space Sciences I eLightning

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 56915

Session Description:
More complex data formats are necessary for remote sensing and satellite measurements, which have a much larger data volume and heterogeneous data types. Some data formats have many powerful features, but these files need to be read with tools that are not familiar to general users. Rapid advancements in technology have improved the ability to conduct research and disseminate data in the Earth and Space Sciences area.

The Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) paradigm has changed the way we develop and use software. Whole industries are now founded on using FOSS. However, it is only one aspect of applying informatics in geoscience research. Interoperability and reuse of software also depend on open formats and open data. Progress in machine learning will depend on open training datasets.
