NH43B:
Building Resilience to Natural Hazards by Utilizing Citizen Science and Understanding Compound Hazards Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 57263
Session Description:
Climate change and urbanization are probably the most important processes that shape our contemporary society. These two processes cause and exacerbate natural hazards via different mechanisms; their interactions further complicate hazard management. However, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding how climate change and urbanization interact with each other, to intensify or reduce natural hazards and beyond. Reducing risk to such hazards and building resilience is crucial. Combined with recent technological advances, a citizen science approach has emerged as a promising direction in the provision of extensive, real-time information in risk management, and can educate and empower communities that are bypassed by more traditional knowledge generation processes. This session invites contributions that advance our understanding of the different mechanisms by which climate change and urbanization change patterns of natural hazards, as well as approaches and outcomes of citizen science projects that improve resilience to these hazards worldwide.
