JSON-Based Structured Data for Discovery, Access, and Usability: Leveraging Schema.org I eLightning

Session Description:
Data are increasingly being made available over the Internet via web architectures. While one of the main drivers for this is citability in academic publications, citability is no guarantee of discoverability.  Despite an increasing number of data discovery portals, researchers report their preference for finding data using internet search engines.  In addition to the need for increased discoverability and accessibility researchers are demanding machine-readable data to facilitate reproducibility.  As data become more mobile, the range of community standards and vocabularies describing environmental data becomes apparent, highlighting issues of interoperability.  This session will provide discussion of current activities leveraging JSON encoding as well as Schema.org to describe data resources and methods to address community needs.
