Aerosol, Cloud, Precipitation, and Radiation Studies over the Southern Ocean I

Session Description:
Motivated by a lack of in situ observational data, large biases in the simulation of radiation budgets over the Southern Ocean in climate models, and knowledge that natural pre-industrial aerosols are a major source of uncertainty in understanding aerosol radiative forcing, several recent observational campaigns have been conducted over the Southern Ocean. The Southern Ocean is a natural laboratory for examining cloud-aerosol-precipitation-radiation interactions for liquid and ice clouds, and the role of primary and secondary marine biogenic aerosols and sea-salt in these interactions. This session solicits contributions that describe recent ship-, island- or airborne field campaigns on Southern Ocean clouds, aerosols, precipitation, and radiation, that use data from such campaigns or satellite remote sensing to advance understanding of these quantities and interactions between them, or that use models with a variety of spatial and temporal scales.
