Session Description:
A key challenge in predicting aerosol effects on climate is the multi-scale nature of the aerosol system: large-scale aerosol effects on clouds and radiation are governed by processes that occur on the particle scale. The characteristics of individual aerosol particles exhibit tremendous variability, change continuously during transport, and impact climate-relevant aerosol properties, such as particle optical properties, reactivity, phase state, cloud condensation activation. However, particle-scale processes are not easily characterized by measurements or easily represented in large-scale models. This session invites submissions on laboratory, field measurements, and/or modeling studies that investigate the physical and chemical properties of aerosol particles and their evolution. Studies that apply advances in the understanding of particle-scale processes to improve the aerosol representation in large-scale models are welcome.
