Marine Aerosols, Trace Gases, and Clouds over the North Atlantic II

Session Description:
The global ocean is a rich source of aerosols and precursor gases that influence cloud radiation effects, and therefore climate. Marine clouds and precipitation are highly susceptible to aerosol perturbations arising from episodic transport of pollution or biologically-driven changes in ocean composition. Unraveling the relative importance of these processes has been challenged by limited observations. Major efforts in recent years have targeted the North Atlantic, including the 5-year NASA North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES), the DOE Aerosol and Cloud Experiments in the Eastern North Atlantic (ACE-ENA), the North Atlantic Climate System Integrated Study (ACSIS) and long-term records from coastal stations (e.g., the Barbados Cloud Observatory, Mace Head Observatory, Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory). This session synthesizes process-based implications of observations and models from recent satellite, aircraft, ship, and ground-based measurement campaigns of North Atlantic sea-air exchange, aerosols and trace gases, seawater ecosystems, and impacts on clouds and radiation.
