A43E:
New Directions for Open-Source Air Quality Data: Applications in Health, Air Quality, Environmental Management, and Public Outreach I
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 58470
Session Description:
Novel applications of open-source air-quality data are advancing the fields of public health, air quality, and environmental management, as well as increasing the impact of public outreach/partnerships globally between scientists and public stakeholders. While NASA satellite data and tools are freely available and accessible, the full, transformative possibilities of satellites have been limited, due to potential users’ lack of knowledge regarding data access/utility. Also, other air-quality data are often isolated, preventing connections needed for policy and public-health applications. This interdisciplinary session will curate and discuss a wide suite of data and products, from satellites, including TEMPO, MAIA, TROPOMI, SENTINAL 4, GEMS, AQUA, TERRA, and from low-cost sensor and ground-based measurements. We will discuss both historical uses of air-quality data and its potential for applications to further the aims of public health, air quality, and environmental groups (including those for environmental justice). Finally, we will address strategies for engaging the public.
