Observations and Modeling of the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere I

Session Description:
The upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS) plays an important role in Earth's radiative balance and climate, and is a region of significant chemistry-climate coupling. The UTLS is characterized by a complex interplay of large- and small-scale circulations, deep convection, clouds and radiation. Understanding and modeling these coupled processes present significant challenges to simulating current behavior and predicting future UTLS changes. In this session, we welcome papers that utilize in situ measurements, satellite observations and/or modeling studies to explore new developments regarding the understanding of fundamental processes, and changes of the UTLS in an evolving climate. Abstract submissions on the full range of UTLS topics are encouraged, including dynamics, transport and mixing, chemical composition, the abundance and distribution of water vapor and aerosols, and cirrus cloud properties and processes.
